The ballot box was the origi nal "glass ceiling." Women finally shatte red it when the 19th Amendment to the US Constitut ion guaranteed them the legal right to vote.

That remarkable seven-decad e struggle for women's suffrage\, led by many extr aordinary leaders – especially Elizabeth Cady Stan ton\, Alice Paul\, and Carrie Chapman Catt – trans formed American democracy\, even though that histo ry is often omitted or barely mentioned in textboo ks and classrooms.
