On Election Day\, Iowans will decide on Ame ndment 1\, a constitutional amendment intended to raise the bar in the Iowa Legislature from a simpl e majority vote to a two-thirds supermajority vote to increase the corporate and personal income tax es.
\n \nAmendment 1 would lock in a decade 's worth of tax cuts skewed to the wealthy — makin g it tough to fix our state's $1billion budget def icit without cutting funding for public schools\, health care\, and other services that Iowans expec t\, much less tackling growing priorities like wat er quality.

Common Good Iowa is coordinating Fair Taxes fo r Iowa's Future\, a policy campaign to educate Iow ans about Amendment 1 and why it's the wrong for I owa's future.
\n \nBorn and raised in Iowa\ , Melissa Peterson joined the sta te’s largest public employees union\, the Iowa Sta te Education Association\, in 2011. In her positio n as Legislative and Policy Director\, she leads I SEA’s lobbying and policy research and supports ca mpaign efforts that seek to protect the interests of public schools\, educators\, and the students t hey serve. In addition to her work at ISEA\, she i s the President of the National Association of Leg islative and Political Specialists in Education (N ALPSE). When she isn’t fighting the latest attacks on public educators and doing her best to protect the fundamentals of the American republic\, she e njoys traveling\, gardening\, live music\, and rel axing with her pups Gracie and Bailey.
