On Election Day\, Iowans will decide on Amendment 1\, a constitutional ame ndment intended to raise the bar in the Iowa Legis lature from a simple majority vote to a two-thirds supermajority vote to increase the corporate and personal income taxes.
\n \nAmendment 1 wou ld lock in a decade's worth of tax cuts skewed to the wealthy — making it tough to fix our state's $ 1billion budget deficit without cutting funding fo r public schools\, health care\, and other service s that Iowans expect\, much less tackling growing priorities like water quality.

\n \nBorn an d raised in Iowa\, Melissa Peterson joined the state’s largest public employees uni on\, the Iowa State Education Association\, in 201 1. In her position as Legislative and Policy Direc tor\, she leads ISEA’s lobbying and policy researc h and supports campaign efforts that seek to prote ct the interests of public schools\, educators\, a nd the students they serve. In addition to her wor k at ISEA\, she is the President of the National A ssociation of Legislative and Political Specialist s in Education (NALPSE). When she isn’t fighting t he latest attacks on public educators and doing he r best to protect the fundamentals of the American republic\, she enjoys traveling\, gardening\, liv e music\, and relaxing with her pups Gracie and Ba iley.
