The overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court two years ago and recent legal efforts to restrict women's reproductive freedoms reflect a larger conservative Christian agenda to reverse the women's rights revolution of the 1960s and 1970s and reimpose on American society "traditional" views of womanhood and family. At our May Intersections, we will examine the history behind ongoing controversies over gender roles, sexuality, reproductive rights, and the struggle of women to create their own paths free of religious and political enforcement of patriarchal norms. Join us as Dr. Peter Jauhiainen, professor of religion at Kirkwood Community College, takes a look at the staggering implications of the language used by Justice Alito in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization (2022) for undermining many civil rights gains of the last sixty years.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dr. Peter D. Jauhiainen (Ph.D, University of Iowa; M.Div., Princeton Theological Seminary) is a professor of religion at Kirkwood Community College where he has taught for 30 years. Dr. Jauhiainen specializes in American religious history, and has a keen interest in the study of the religious-political right, white Christian nationalism, religion and public education, and the intersection of religion and politics.
