After being subjugated to oppression and marginalization in the United States for many years, Viana’s story began by reclaiming the narrative and using it as fuel to transform a whole community through her youth advocacy and activism. Carrying the “triple-trouble” identity (a Muslim, an Arab, and a Woman) has led her on a personal journey to resist bigotry and stand up to racism by finding a spot for the Muslim youth within the big community, and by creating a platform for them to feel seen, heard, and worthy of their identities. These youth are the lifeline of our community — they are the torchbearers and the ones to create positive change in the world around us. Mariam Girls’ Club was founded to correct the past, change the present, and aim for a better future.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Viana Qadoura is the founder and director of the Mariam Girls' Club and is dedicated to addressing critical issues impacting Muslim youth in her local Iowa community. As a Human Rights Commissioner for the City of lowa City, the Al-Iman Weekend School Extracurricular Activities' Organizer, and establisher of the first Muslim Youth Mini-Library in the area, Viana focuses her work on eradicating stereotypes, ending prejudice and political propaganda towards Muslim students, educating youth about their rights, and providing the community with social and safe platforms to help combat negativity by fostering feelings of camaraderie and support.

Viana energizes the sense of community in beautiful and humbling ways by connecting Muslim youth with various local organizations for them to volunteer at, learn from, or partner with to host a wide range of events. She has a positive attitude and tireless energy to encourage others to stand for what is right, to assist others, and to be an active member within their communities. Viana is inspired daily by those before her who sacrificed so much for the sake of humanity, as well as by her husband and their six children who supported her through a long and demanding journey. In her free time, she likes to spend time outdoors with her family.
