The Iowa Environmental Council filed a petition with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeking emergency action to address drinking water concerns in Northeast Iowa. At our March Intersections, Michael Schmidt, Staff Attorney with the IEC, will provide background of the water quality concerns in Iowa and discuss what led to the petition. He'll also share what state agencies and the EPA – and you – can do to address water quality risks in Iowa.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTER | Michael Schmidt joined the Iowa Environmental Council in 2019 and works across IEC's program areas. He was a staff attorney for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, where he focused on clean water and mining issues through enforcement, permitting, and rulemaking actions. Michael previously worked for the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, a state-based nonprofit, where he engaged in legal, legislative, and policy advocacy on water quality issues. He has a law degree from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. in political science from the University of Iowa.

Intersections is a monthly gathering of the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa in Cedar Rapids. It's an opportunity to learn, to participate in civil dialogue, and to discuss issues at the crossroads of religion and politics.
