On Election Day, Iowans will decide on Amendment 1, a constitutional amendment intended to raise the bar in the Iowa Legislature from a simple majority vote to a two-thirds supermajority vote to increase the corporate and personal income taxes.
Amendment 1 would lock in a decade's worth of tax cuts skewed to the wealthy — making it tough to fix our state's $1billion budget deficit without cutting funding for public schools, health care, and other services that Iowans expect, much less tackling growing priorities like water quality.
Join Kylie Spies of Common Good Iowa and Melissa Peterson of the Iowa State Education Association to learn how Amendment 1 would rig the rules against building a fair tax system where corporations and the rich pay their fair share.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS | Kylie Spies leads Common Good Iowa’s work on tax and budget policy. Common Good Iowa is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization promoting policies that expand opportunity for Iowa children, families and workers. Common Good Iowa is coordinating Fair Taxes for Iowa's Future, a policy campaign to educate Iowans about Amendment 1 and why it's the wrong for Iowa's future.
Born and raised in Iowa, Melissa Peterson joined the state’s largest public employees union, the Iowa State Education Association, in 2011. In her position as Legislative and Policy Director, she leads ISEA’s lobbying and policy research and supports campaign efforts that seek to protect the interests of public schools, educators, and the students they serve. In addition to her work at ISEA, she is the President of the National Association of Legislative and Political Specialists in Education (NALPSE). When she isn’t fighting the latest attacks on public educators and doing her best to protect the fundamentals of the American republic, she enjoys traveling, gardening, live music, and relaxing with her pups Gracie and Bailey.
