Our February presentation offers an in-depth exploration of the ever-changing landscape of domestic terrorism. This discussion delves into the intricate frameworks that define domestic terrorism, providing real-world examples and dissecting the role of misinformation in propagating these threats. Participants will engage in a critical discussion on the impact and reach of domestic terrorism while learning practical measures for enhancing security, focusing on developing situational awareness and skills for identifying suspicious items to safeguard facilities and communities. This Crossroads is designed to equip attendees with both theoretical understanding and actionable strategies to effectively address and mitigate the risks associated with domestic terrorism.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTER: Diogenes Ayala is the Emergency Management & Homeland Security Director for Madison County, Iowa, where he leads in planning, protection, mitigation, response, and coordination against various community hazards. His focus is on fostering a culture of preparedness in the county. A veteran of the United States Navy, Ayala holds a Bachelor's & Masters degrees in Criminal Justice from Simpson College and is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. He has completed programs like the Texas A&M Infrastructure Protection Program, Executive Leadership Education from Notre Dame, and Hazardous Materials/WMD Operations & Technician training from the Department of Homeland Security. Additionally, he's a graduate of the Bomb-Making Materials Awareness Program (BMAP) and Enhanced Trainer program by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Ayala is currently advancing his education in Security Studies (Homeland Security and Defense) at the Naval Postgraduate School, expecting to graduate in September 2024.

 

Crossroads is a monthly gathering of the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa in Des Moines. It's an opportunity to learn, to participate in civil dialogue, and to discuss issues at the crossroads of religion and politics.
