Intersections | Racial Disparities in Iowa's Criminal Justice System

Registration is closed for this event
November 1, 2019 -- 11:45 AM-1:00 PM

Presenter: BRIAN FARRELL, Associate Director of the Center for Human Rights at the University of Iowa College of Law

Iowa is among the nation’s leaders in its disproportionate incarceration of racial minorities. This discussion will examine several factors related to race in Iowa’s criminal justice system in an attempt to understand how we can improve these numbers.

Dr. Brian Farrell is a Lecturer in Law and Human Rights, Director of the Citizen Lawyer Program, and Associate Director of the Center for Human Rights at the University of Iowa College of Law. He is also an adjunct lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway and was a co-founder of the Innocence Project of Iowa, an all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to preventing and remedying wrongful convictions. Brian received his bachelor’s degree from St. Ambrose University (1995), his law degree from the University of Iowa (1998), and a master’s degree (2002) and PhD (2014) in international human rights law from the National University of Ireland Galway. He practiced law in Iowa and Georgia, focusing on criminal defense, appeals, and postconviction relief. He teaches international law, human rights, and criminal law courses, and is the author of over twenty publications on international law, human rights, criminal law, and legal education.
