Meatpacking America: What Research in Churches and Packing Plants Can Teach Us About Immigration in our State and Nation

Presenter:
Kristy Nabhan-Warren, Professor of Religious Studies, U of Iowa

FEBRUARY 3, 2023  11:45 AM – 1:00 PM
Groundswell Cafe, 201 3rd Ave SW, Cedar Rapids

** in-person event **

In many ways, today’s United States is a deeply divided country. Yet there is a parallel reality that ethnographer Kristy Nabhan-Warren discovered in her research in rural Iowa. What she observed are bridge-building efforts in workplaces like meatpacking plants. Meatpacking America tells a both/and story — that America is divided but is also a place where folks are drawing on their faith to heal divisions. In her talk on February 3, Kristy will share takeaways from her research and what a focus on Iowa can tell us about broader themes in the contemporary United States.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Kristy Nabhan-Warren is Associate Vice President of Research and is Professor and the Figge Chair of Catholic Studies at The University of Iowa. Her research focuses on U.S. Latinx Catholics in the United States, and her books include The Virgin of El Barrio: Marian Apparitions, Catholic Evangelizing, and Mexican-American Activism (NYU Press, 2005); Cursillos in America: Catholics, Protestants, and Fourth-Day Spirituality (UNC Press, 2013); Américan Woman: The Virgin of Guadalupe, Latinos/as and Accompaniment (Loyola Marymount U Press, 2018) and most recently, Meatpacking America: How Migration, Work and Faith Unite and Divide the Heartland (UNC, 2021) and The Handbook of Latina/x/o Christianities (Oxford U Press, 2022). She has published numerous articles, book chapters, and book reviews, and is a regular reviewer and blurb writer for new books. Kristy is creator of and acquisition editor for the book series Where Religion Lives, with UNC Press. She is passionate about mentoring young scholars and working with them as they develop their authorial voices.

Kristy is currently working on her next book, a hybrid auto-ethnography/methods book for classroom use that focuses on her 30 years as an ethnographer of religion. This book project arises from many conversations and requests from faculty and students to write a book that can be used in undergraduate and graduate-level classrooms.

In addition to her day jobs, Kristy enjoys baking, binging on Netflix, and hanging out with her husband and three teenagers. She also loves to walk her dogs Rosie and Kipo and catch up on the local news and drama with fellow dog-walkers.
