Drinking water protection in Iowa

Presenter: Michael Schmidt
Staff Attorney, Iowa Environmental Council

The Iowa Environmental Council filed a petition with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeking emergency action to address drinking water concerns in Northeast Iowa. At our March Intersections, Michael Schmidt, Staff Attorney with the IEC, will provide background of the water quality concerns in Iowa and discuss what led to the petition. He'll also share what state agencies and the EPA – and you – can do to address water quality risks in Iowa.

Please note: The church is undergoing renovations for the next few months, during which time we will meet in the Gathering Space. Enter the Second Avenue doors, go up the stairs or take the elevator to the second floor. Once there, take a left and you will arrive at the Gathering Space. For those who know the building, this is across from the sanctuary.

There are three ways to attend Intersections. Registration is required for all three:

  • Attend in person (with lunch) by clicking here. Three boxed lunch options are available: smoked turkey, ham & swiss, and vegetarian wrap; boxed lunches are $15 each. You must pre-order and pay for your lunch by 12:00 PM on Tuesday, March 4. Late orders or walk-in requests for lunch will not be available.
  • Attend in person (no lunch) by clicking here. There is no cost for this option, but we do need your RSVP to ensure we have enough seating.

Connecting the dots between the attacks

Panel:

  • Keenan Crow, One Iowa
  • Sam Helmick, Iowa City Public Library and American Library Association President-Elect
  • Melissa Peterson, Iowa State Education Association
  • Mazie Stilwell, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa

There is so much happening at the Iowa statehouse and so many attacks on different groups of people and public institutions. But we often talk about and advocate on these issues as if they are isolated. What if they're all really connected? A panel of organizational leaders will discuss issues under attack at the statehouse and help to connect the dots, including the important issues of LGBTQ rights, public libraries, public education, and reproductive health care.

There are three ways to attend Crossroads. Registration is required for all three:

  • Attend in person (with lunch) by clicking here. Four bag lunch sandwich options are available for $15: turkey, roast beef, ham salad, and vegetarian. You must pre-order and pay for your lunch by 12:00 PM on Wednesday, March 19. Late orders or walk-in requests for lunch will not be available.
  • Attend in person (no lunch) by clicking here. There is no cost for this option, but we do need your RSVP to ensure we have enough seating.
  • Watch via YouTube by clicking here. This online presentation will be livestreamed on our YouTube channel.
